Avon Bug Guard Facts, Info & FAQ

As an Independent Avon Representative I get a lot of questions about Avon products. Some are about Avon’s Skincare line or about their makeup but most are regarding Avon’s popular Skin So Soft products. One product in particular is Avon Bug Guard, which is also part of the Skin So Soft family. There is often confusion about Avon Skin So Soft , which is often used as a “home remedy” insect repellent and Avon Bug Guard and I’m often asked to explain the difference between the two as well as whether or not Avon Bug Guard is safe for the whole family to use.
You may be wondering the same also, so I’ll begin with the most obvious difference between the two products.
1) Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil is labeled as moisturizing bath oil. The label does not claim to be an Insect Repellent or show instructions on how to use as an insect repellent. The Avon Corporation has also stated that “Skin So Soft Bath Oil is moisturizing bath oil, not an insect repellent. Therefore, it is not registered as such with the EPA, and we may not make insect repellent claims about it”
2) Avon Bug Guard is labeled as an Insect Repellent and has been registered with the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).
EPA registered means the repellent, has been evaluated for efficacy and has been tested for safety on humans. Before a product can be marketed as an Insect Repellent the EPA has specific requirements that need to be met: the product must contain an EPA registered Active Ingredients: (DEET, Picariden, IR3535 or Oil of lemon eucalyptus) and the product company must provide EPA with technical information on the effectiveness of the product against mosquitoes and/or ticks.
Avon Bug Guard has met all EPA requirements whereas Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil has not. Because Avon Bug Guard is EPA registered it is safe to say that it is safe for the whole family including children, and pregnant or nursing women.
There are three varieties of Avon Bug Guard:
Avon Bug Guard plus Picaridin
Avon Bug Guard Plus IR3535® Expedition™ SPF 30
Avon Bug Guard Plus IR3535 Sunscreen Moisturizing Lotions
Depending on the time of day and the type of outdoor activity will determine which Avon Bug Guard would be right for you. All are DEET free and are available in a pump, aerosol spray or lotion.
